Tesla’s Cumulative Vehicle Sales Surpass 9 Million — And It Becomes #1 BEV Seller Again

Tesla’s vehicle sales have declined in recent years, and are basically stagnant in a good quarter these days. However, it is still one of the top EV sellers in the world. Actually, news is that it took back the title of #1 from BYD in the first quarter of 2026 after BYD had a very poor quarter that saw its sales drop by about 25%.

Also, with almost a decade and a half of vehicle sales (well, not counting the low-volume Roadster), the company is nearing 10 million cumulative vehicle sales. In total, through the end of Q1 2026, Tesla reached 9,240,944 cumulative vehicle sales.

Note that I’m included embedded versions of each chart down at the bottom of this article in case those show better for you.

Breaking down cumulative sales by model, using estimates since Tesla doesn’t provide exact model-by-model sales figures, we can see below that the Model 3 reached 3,362,035 cumulative sales and the Model Y reached 5,058,074 cumulative sales. In fact, the Model Y must have been the first electric vehicle model to reach half a million cumulative sales!

So, yes, the company is not doing as well as it once was, and it’s not doing nearly as well as it was supposed to be doing based on Elon Musk’s forecasts over the years, but it’s still one of the core leaders in the EV transition and is approaching a monumental 10 million cumulative vehicle sales.
