Why Is Tesla VP of Software Engineering Stepping Down

Last Updated on: 5th April 2025, 03:13 am

According to reporting from Bloomberg News earlier today, Tesla vice president of software engineering David Lau is resigning from Tesla.

Lau, who has at times been featured at Tesla company events for shareholders and the public, has been vice president of software engineering at Tesla for more than 8 years, since 2017. He has been with Tesla for 12 years and 7 months.

Naturally, when such a notable executive leaves, one is inclined to wonder why. Is it because of something bad happening at the company? Or is it for personal reasons, including whether or not to chase other opportunities?

In the case of Lau, we don’t have any insight into why he’s leaving. We do know that Tesla sales have dropped recently — across all of 2024, sales were lower than across all of 2023; and now sales are down even more in 2025. Some may see the future of the company as bleak, and thus want out before things turn from bad to worse. There’s been reporting of Tesla board members offloading a lot of their shares in recent months. Is this all connected?

Or has there been some significant failure in Tesla software, leading to Lau getting pushed out? Perhaps he’s not resigning as much as being forced to resign. Though, that seems less likely since there are no signs that he’s been in charge of any company failures.

Perhaps Lau has just decided it’s time to move on to other things, time for fresh challenges or more hours with the family?
