Ford Mustang Mach-E Wins TOP SAFETY PICK+ Award

The Ford Mustang Mach-E is the third best selling electric vehicle in the US this year, only trailing the Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3. It’s still one of the best looking electric vehicles on the market, and it’s highly capable and the form factor many buyers want. Now we’ve got more good news about Ford’s first serious electric offering — it’s just won a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Not that this is a highly regarded independent analysis — and from an insurance agency, so you know they aren’t messing around.

“These awards recognize vehicles that achieve high performance in IIHS’ rigorous crashworthiness and crash-avoidance evaluations,” Ford notes. “In order to achieve a TOP SAFETY PICK award, a vehicle must receive good ratings in the small overlap front test and updated side tests, an acceptable or good rating in the original moderate front test, as well as acceptable or good ratings in pedestrian front crash prevention and acceptable- or good-rated headlights across all trim levels. Vehicles must earn an acceptable or good rating in the updated moderate front test to receive a TOP SAFETY PICK+ award.”

Ford F-150 models also were awarded the TOP SAFETY PICK award, but not the top-tier TOP SAFETY PICK+ award that the Mustang Mach-E won. Kudos to the EV. But then again, we’ve known for years electric vehicles are safer. For more on that, see our report: The EV Safety Advantage.
