The Lucid Gravity is Lucid’s new model, its second model. It’s an SUV rather than a sedan, which is expected to make it more appealing to a larger portion of the market. Now we have a few more details on the Gravity, as well as some good news about Lucid’s first model, the Air.

Lucid Gravity Pricing

The Gravity is launching with a starting price of $80,000 (technically, $79,900, before taxes). This ain’t no Tesla Model Y or Honda CR-V competitor. It’s still solidly in the luxury class, and will thus have a limited market. However, it’s a great looking luxury SUV with several high-tech and high-quality features, and it could definitely help to cut into the sales of large pollution-spewing, gas-guzzling luxury SUVs.

The $80,000 option is the Touring trim, but a $94,900 Grand Touring trim is also for sale and will be delivered first. The Grand Touring trim comes with 440 miles of range (more than twice the range of my Tesla Model 3) and 800 horsepower.

Production is supposed to start on the Grand Touring at the end of this year (2024), while production is supposed to start on the Touring trim at the end of 2025.

Apparently eager to capitalize on post-election euphoria and post-election depression, Lucid is opening up orders for the Gravity on November 7 (two days after Election Day in the USA). Current Lucid owners get priority when ordering.

Lucid is confident it’s got a hit on its hands, and looking at the specs, it’s hard to disagree. “The Lucid Gravity is designed to be the best SUV ever with space for up to seven adults plus all their gear. Lucid Gravity offers up to 120 cubic feet of total usable cargo space, including the frunk. An optional frunk seat can accommodate two adults while the vehicle is parked. […] An optional three-chamber air suspension adapts to changing terrain, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride and precise handling.”

Lucid Air Safety

Yesterday, Lucid announced that the Air received a safety rating of a full five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). This is the overall rating from the New Car Assessment Program for 2025 and applies to all trims of the Air — the Pure, the Touring, the Grand Touring, and the Sapphire.

The overall safety rating covers frontal crash, side crash, and rollover testing.

“Safety has been a top priority from the outset at Lucid and achieving five stars in NHTSA’s New Car Assessment Program will give owners further confidence in their Lucid Air,” said Eric Bach, SVP Product and Chief Engineer at Lucid. “This is a fantastic result, albeit one that was fully expected given the comprehensive engineering process for Lucid Air.”

Indeed. Given that electric vehicles fundamentally have numerous potential advantages over gas-powered cars in terms of safety as well as the fact that the Lucid Air is firmly in the luxury car market, one would expect Lucid to score 5 stars. Nonetheless, Lucid adds that it “brought clean-sheet design and engineering to the Air sedan with the goal of securing the highest possible safety ratings,” and it has. “Built from high-strength, lightweight aluminum, Lucid Air features an innovative battery pack design that adds to the overall strength of the car’s structure.” Congratulations to the Lucid team on the excellent design. Without a doubt, Lucid owners must be happy with their cars.

Nice cars, if you have the money for them.
