One of India’s largest integrated solar power companies has secured the rights to develop a 300 megawatt solar power project for a government-owned company.

Tata Power Solar Power Systems has won a contract to construct a 300 megawatt solar power project for NLC India. The project shall be located in the Bikaner district of Rajasthan in northwest India.

The engineering, procurement, and commissioning, or EPC, contract has been awarded for Rs 17.5 billion ($213 million). Tata Power is required to commission the project within 18 months and will also provide operation and maintenance service for a period of three years following commissioning of the project.

Once fully commissioned, the project is expected to generate 750 million kilowatt-hours of electricity and offset 0.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

The project was awarded to NLC India under the Central Public Sector Undertaking (CPSU) scheme. Only government entities are allowed to participate in these scheme.

The CPSU scheme mandates winners of tenders to either consume the entire power generated themselves or sell it to other government owned companies. Power from these projects cannot be sold or used by private companies.

Projects awarded under this scheme are also mandated to use cells and modules manufactured in India. The scheme was launched by the central government as an incentive to boost domestic solar module manufacturing.
