South Carolina Is Getting A New EV Battery Materials Facility

If everybody woke up tomorrow, had money in hand, and wanted to buy an EV, it couldn’t happen. It’s not that we don’t want everybody to have one, but increasing EV battery production involves a number of complex processes, which require a large amount of minerals, which we’d need more mines to get. Even after creating the necessary components, they need to be tested rigorously to guarantee safety before sending them off.

So, it’s always newsworthy when there’s a new battery facility opening up. We need all we can get, so everyone will sell their cells. For this reason, Cirba Solutions’ recent announcement is an important milestone for the sustainability and viability of electric vehicles moving forward. By investing in a world-class lithium-ion EV battery recycling facility, the company is paving the way for a secure and sustainable supply chain that will be able to meet the increasing demand for EV batteries now and in years ahead.

This investment also shows their commitment to developing an efficient and comprehensive closed-loop system that can provide materials needed for high-grade EV batteries, allowing companies to lower their costs and increase production at the same time.

“The State of South Carolina and Richland County have been tremendous partners in supporting Cirba Solutions’ strategy to build a sustainable battery materials supply chain,” said David Klanecky, President and CEO of Cirba Solutions. “We are proud to bring this battery materials mega-site to Richland County, which will create generational jobs in the state and support an amazing community. Additionally, it shows our commitment to provide sustainably sourced and domestic battery-grade raw materials for cathode production in North America.”

Cirba Solutions is making a significant commitment to Richland County, with plans to break ground on a 200+ acre battery materials facility this year. The campus is expected to create over 300 jobs when it opens in late 2024, and will provide a huge boost to the local economy and community. Once operational, this flagship facility will be instrumental in advancing both sustainability and economic progress in the region.

Beyond creating over 300 jobs, the company also says it will use its new 200+ acre facility to foster a vibrant educational environment for local communities. As part of this commitment, Cirba Solutions will provide training courses and workshops on materials processing technology related to end-of-life batteries. This focus on utilizing clean energy within their operations ensures that thoughtfully executed practices are used while converting recycled batteries into reusable materials. With this investment, Cirba Solutions is demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability and economic progress in South Carolina and beyond.

“We are thrilled to be expanding our footprint and partnering with the state of South Carolina. This flagship battery materials site is crucial to the success of North America’s battery supply chain and is strategically located to support our partners,” said Luke Kissam, Chairman of Cirba Solutions Board.

In addition to the upcoming 200+ acre facility in South Carolina, the company has recently expanded its Lancaster, Ohio and Trail, British Columbia facilities for processing batteries. This expansion of their footprint is creating hundreds of jobs at these sites, while providing critical materials for electric vehicle manufacturing.

With this strategic investment, Cirba Solutions is demonstrating its commitment to investing in local communities while driving forward innovation in sustainable technologies. Hopefully this is the first of many more facilities like it.
