Volkswagen Is Planning An Electric Station Wagon, The ID.7 Tourer

Remember the Volkswagen ID Vizzion concept? It regularly appeared alongside ID.3 and ID.Buzz prototypes, and like most early designs, looked pretty exotic. And, like most designs as they move from auto show to final production version, the design has become more tame over time. But unlike the ID.3 (which sadly isn’t going to be released in the States) and the ID.4, the Vizzion design hasn’t hit the streets yet. However, recent reports based on a German government filing show that the Vizzion is finally going to get a name, and it’s also going to come in a station wagon version.

According to German language Electrive.net, which got the information from another German language publication I’m too dumb (read: not proficient in German) to find, Volkswagen filed a new trademark for the ID.7 Tourer. This name comes after the company already filed trademarks for the ID.1 through ID.9 names, effectively reserving numbers for a range of electric vehicles. An EV sedan, aiming to be the size of today’s gas-powered Passat, is going to get the ID.7 name.

It has already been known for some time that the Vizzion would come in two varieties, both based on the MEB architecture. The normal Vizzion, which will end up being the ID.7, is a traditional sedan, like the Passat. This will end up being somewhere between the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model S in size, so it should be pretty versatile in the markets.

Unlike most manufacturers, Volkswagen still makes station wagons instead of only making crossovers, so to check that box for current customers, VW is also building a station wagon version, previously called the Volkswagen Space Vizzion (you know, because it has more space than the regular Vizzion, and space is a very cool word unless your significant other is asking for some). These vehicles had been under development under the codename Aero A and Aero B previously.

It seems pretty likely that it will bring the ID.7 to the United States, as Americans still like larger sedans, at least a little bit. But we sure do seem to like our crossovers a lot more than station wagons. Like vans, station wagons used to be a lot more popular in the States, but have fallen out of style. So the big question is whether Volkswagen will be happy to sell a lower-volume model along with the more popular sedan, or whether it will decide to just stick with a sedan in the United States.

Regardless of where it gets sold, we do know a few other things about the vehicle from other reporting. According to Inside EVs‘ coverage of the Space Vizzion concept, we’re probably looking at a range of around 300 miles (EPA). The wagon version is probably going to give lower range as it would be less aerodynamically efficient. It will come as all-wheel drive or as rear-wheel drive, which is a big improvement over today’s gas-powered front-drive vehicles. Total power is 250 kilowatts.

This could, of course, change as we approach production, but because the Space Vizzion was closer to production, it probably won’t change by much.
