On its way to building a truly carbon-neutral car by 2030, performance EV brand Polestar has managed to reduce carbon emissions by 6% per car by focusing on improving the efficiencies of its factories and supply lines. The company says it’s proving that business growth and carbon neutrality are in fact compatible, goals it strives to reach climate neutrality across its value chain by 2040.
“We work with each step we take to support our climate strategy,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Polestar CEO. “Goals set 10 or 20 years ahead in time might feel ‘fluffy,’ (and) that’s where proper reporting comes in— making us accountable for the steps taken every year towards that goal. This is the climate decade. Change and improvement must happen all the time, now, and we can’t afford to wait. I’m proud to say we reduced greenhouse gas-emissions per car sold by 6%.”
The push for carbon neutrality is always reason for celebration, but far too often companies make claims and set goals that don’t ever get reached. Polestar believes they will their goals, however, because their goals are quantifiable, and measurable. “What gets measured gets done,” says Fredrika Klarén, Head of Sustainability at Polestar. “Sustainability reporting is key to the transparency we abide by at Polestar. Through annual reports, we monitor our direction towards our ambitious goals and show that we do what we say.”
Cutting emissions in factories, reducing the carbon impact of the materials it uses in its interiors, and using rail instead of trucks to ship cars may not get Polestar to zero by themselves, but they’re all real steps in the right direction that are helping create a better world TODAY. To keep track of how Polestar is doing, Klarén released this Sustainability Report video, below. Take a few minutes to watch it, then let us know what you think of the brand’s goals and their progress towards meeting them in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
