Glimpse At Future Tesla Autopilot Update: Speed Limit Recognition, Roundabout Support

Twitter user “green”/@greentheonly, a known source for early views of Tesla software updates, now gives us a glimpse of a future Autopilot update that includes speed limit recognition with 3D-rendered signs and roundabout support. Roundabout support is something that many are excited about.

Yesterday, UK YouTuber TeslaDriver shared a video of Tesla’s latest Autopilot software managing the steering during a full roundabout. He drives down the M4 to the Supercharges and the car is already on Autopilot (note: seeing the steering wheel on the right side is a bit uncanny). He said that the car was doing all of the driving and that it even got him into the correct lane.

His excitement is contagious, and seeing his sheer joy at watching his car drive the roundabout without any input from him is endearing.

When asked if he knew anything regarding the fundamental Autopilot rewrite that Elon Musk has mentioned, green responded that the next generation seemed to be plaidnet. He noted that plaidnet traces appeared in 2020.8, but that it was a different neural network (NN) and he hasn’t looked into it that much yet.

During the Third Row Tesla podcast interview with Elon Musk, he spoke about Autopilot undergoing a foundational rewrite. “There’s quite a significant foundational rewrite in the Tesla Autopilot system that’s almost complete,” he said. Instead of having planning, perception, [and] image recognition all separate, they are being combined. The neural net is absorbing more and more of the problem.”

Elon Musk also mentioned 3D labeling. For those who may be confused, Brett Swanson explained it well in the tweet above, text here again in case you can’t see that: “The AI has created a 3D world first and then deciding what objects are what and how to interact. As Elon said, a 3X order of magnitude increase in intelligence.”

I don't like paywalls. You don't like paywalls. Who likes paywalls? Here at CleanTechnica, we implemented a limited paywall for a while, but it always felt wrong — and it was always tough to decide what we should put behind there. In theory, your most exclusive and best content goes behind a paywall. But then fewer people read it! We just don't like paywalls, and so we've decided to ditch ours. Unfortunately, the media business is still a tough, cut-throat business with tiny margins. It's a never-ending Olympic challenge to stay above water or even perhaps — gasp — grow. So ...
