Romanian Oil Company Powers Its Gas Stations With Solar Panels

OMV Petrom service stations in Romania are using new solar arrays to help generate electricity.

Romanian oil and gas company OMV Petrom has installed solar panels on the canopies that cover the gas pumps at 40 service stations in Romania. The output of those solar arrays will provide about 30,000 kWh of electricity annually — enough to offset approximately 10% of the electricity need to operate those service stations. The solar systems cost €1.3 million to install.

“We are constantly interested in reducing our carbon footprint in all our business segments, including refining and distribution activities. This year we further pursued our environmentally-friendly initiatives including the setup of photovoltaic panels in filling stations. Our plan is to increase the number of filling stations equipped with photovoltaic panels to 78 by the end of the year,” says Radu Capraum, an OMV Petrom board member, in a company news announcement.

The measures the company has adopted since 2010 have helped reduce its carbon footprint by 22%, according to a report by PV Magazine. It expects it to reduce emissions another 27% by the end of 2025. Thanks to the energy produced by the photovoltaic panels, each filling station will avoid 8.3 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Austrian oil and gas producer OMV is the majority owner of OMV Petrom. The Romanian subsidiary began investing in renewable energy in 2010 when it purchased a wind farm in the country.

Renewable energy is being used more frequently to power mining operations and fossil fuel extraction sites, as companies that contribute significantly to the global increase in carbon dioxide emissions seek to benefit from the low cost and stable prices of renewables. There is a certain irony in seeing solar panels installed on the canopies of filling stations. Perhaps one day, that contradiction will be resolved when electricity from solar panels is used to power EV charging equipment instead of gasoline and diesel pumps. The changeover is coming and getting closer every day.

I don't like paywalls. You don't like paywalls. Who likes paywalls? Here at CleanTechnica, we implemented a limited paywall for a while, but it always felt wrong — and it was always tough to decide what we should put behind there. In theory, your most exclusive and best content goes behind a paywall. But then fewer people read it! We just don't like paywalls, and so we've decided to ditch ours. Unfortunately, the media business is still a tough, cut-throat business with tiny margins. It's a never-ending Olympic challenge to stay above water or even perhaps — gasp — grow. So ...
