From Plug&Charge to Smart Charging: Using CCS ISO/IEC 15118

ISO 15118 Webinar

ISO/IEC 15118 Accepted and Supported Across the Electric Vehicle Industry

As more electric vehicle (EV) models are released and EV charging stations are deployed, the technology supporting the growth has evolved, being driven by consumer and business use cases. This evolution is most apparent in the Combined Charging System’s (CCS) rapidly growing use of charging communication protocol ISO/IEC 15118. Following the typical technology development process, CCS ISO/IEC 15118 has matured and adapted based on needs and benefits to EV drivers and businesses selling and supporting the growing number of EVs.

First and foremost, the goal is to increase EV adoption by making it easy for drivers to choose EVs. Because primary barriers to EV adoption are EV charging station accessibility and ease of use, that is one of the key features of ISO/IEC 15118 Plug&Charge.

Driven by automakers, Plug&Charge gained traction quickly, enabling the simplest charging experience — the EV driver plugs in their EV and the charging automatically starts without the need for a credit card, RFID card, or phone app. Plug&Charge is being implemented by many EV industry stakeholders, including Porsche, Ford, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz, and charging networks Greenlots, Electrify America, Ionity, has2be, and ultra-E.

The next business case addressed was how to support the charging of all the new EVs being introduced in the next 10 to 20 years without costly infrastructure upgrades based on peak charging demands. This need led to the development of grid management capabilities within the ISO/IEC 15118 standard for electric vehicle smart and bidirectional charging.

Smart charging allows the vehicle owner to schedule a charging session according to their needs and the grid to develop parameters, creating flexibility and maximization of the grid. Providing energy management with smart charging also reduces significant additional charging costs, such as demand charges, and enables power sharing for fleets. Bidirectional charging benefits grid operators by allowing EVs to discharge electricity back to the grid where advanced energy management capabilities can facilitate electricity load balancing, thereby making the EV a distributed energy resource. These innovative use cases facilitated through ISO/IEC 15118 protocol accomplish all this through advanced and secure connection between the electric vehicle and the charging station.

The 360º View Webinar will provide a deep dive into the business and technical benefits of ISO/IEC 15118 from the people responsible for the integration of the standard into their vehicles, charging stations, and backend systems. More specifically, panelists from automotive OEMs, charging networks, energy providers, and hardware providers will discuss:

  • ISO 15118’s security framework,
  • Scalability of the technology,
  • How the industry is benefiting from the economy of scale, and why biodiversity of the CCS ecosystem is a key enabler of the growth,
  • The security of the ISO 15118 standard and more.

Demonstrating CCS ISO/IEC 15118’s benefits in real-time, the webinar will also feature a Plug&Charge video demo using a real vehicle, Hager’s charging station, IoTecha’s backend, and Hubject’s secure Plug&Charge certificate management ecosystem.

The 360o View Webinar is sponsored by CharIN, CleanTechnica, Hager, Hubject, and IoTecha on Monday, October 28 and will be accessible by remote participants around the world. Register here to join the conversation live.
