Tesla Smart Summon Chases Kids (Video From Inside Car)

Okay, so I’m sitting in the car waiting for my whole family (husband and two little girls) to come back from a quick stop for shopping. The car is plugged in and charging at a Tesla Supercharger (thank you to buyers who used our referral code). My husband came up with a funny phrase to describe a “park & plug” state, which is “plark.” So, you could say I’m sitting in a “plarked” car in a Tesla “plarking lot.”

I can see them coming. I can see my husband unplugging the car. Then, I can see them trying to be sneaky and all giggly and looking at me funny. They run away from me, and here it all starts.

As you can see in the video above, the car was then turned on by them using the Smart Summon function.

This is a really weird experience, and the most amazing experience you can imagine sitting in a car (in the passenger seat). The lights turn on, the steering wheel starts to move in a crazy way, jerking around a little,  and then the car starts to drive by itself, with no one being in the driver’s seat. It even turns on the turn signals while taking turns. This is just crazy!!! There is no driver in this car! This is what “The future is now” stands for, isn’t it?! Am I right?

The car drives very cautiously on its own. It moves in a safe way, watching for everything and everyone around. Nonetheless, those three crazy people in this video are running away from the car — it would never get them.

The only thing I didn’t like about this Tesla Smart Summon experience was the sharp stop at the end when the car hit the brakes. It just feels so weird and totally not needed, having in mind the speed the car is driving. The car could stop in a slower and a more natural & smooth way.

Overall, though, I think it’s awesome!

We’ve done this a few times already, with the girls being outside the car when the empty car was coming to us in a parking lot (or sometimes plarking lot). Our girls get super excited whenever we are able to use the Summon function, but watching other people’s faces and reactions is just great, especially when they have no idea what this Tesla feature is and might not even know anything about Tesla.

Editor’s note: The girls and I were slowly running and screaming about a ghost driving the car during the video shoot. In my head, the video would capture all of that. Clearly, that was not going to be the case since the camera recording it all could not hear us. 😛 In any case, it was a fun experience and the girls got to take turns summoning the car while running away from it. Thank you for the fun, Elon. A few years ago, never would have dreamt of such a day arriving. —Zach

If you’d like to buy a Tesla Model 3 and you’d like to get 1,000 miles of free Supercharging in the process, feel free to our my referral code: https://ts.la/zachary63404. The girls would appreciate it.

I don't like paywalls. You don't like paywalls. Who likes paywalls? Here at CleanTechnica, we implemented a limited paywall for a while, but it always felt wrong — and it was always tough to decide what we should put behind there. In theory, your most exclusive and best content goes behind a paywall. But then fewer people read it! We just don't like paywalls, and so we've decided to ditch ours. Unfortunately, the media business is still a tough, cut-throat business with tiny margins. It's a never-ending Olympic challenge to stay above water or even perhaps — gasp — grow. So ...
