As I’ve noted a few times this week, I’ve been digging through our archives (it’s a long story) in recent weeks. I’ve found a handful of fun and perhaps enlightening gems in the process. Below is a story about the first Tesla hearse (funeral car), which was very popular when I published it in February 2018. If you missed it then or just want to check out this unique Tesla again, scroll down and enjoy the show.
Not that long ago, the world’s first Tesla hearse popped onto the scene. Tesla hearse? Yes, someone had the brilliant idea to turn a Tesla into a funeral car. I was in Holland for rEVolution 2017 and a great cleantech leader from the Netherlands, Remco van der Horst, lined up the visit. Of course, I was thrilled with the idea. I was eager to capture the car in person and talk more to company reps and the car’s lucky driver, so I enthusiastically took a trip to Den Haag (The Hague) for a visit.
The Tesla hearse is not just awesome for its novelty, its hot Tesla branding and tech, and its interesting look. The car is also interesting to highlight as Model 3 production rises, as the world starts to shift in a much bigger way to electric transport, and as we speed up the move away from polluting vehicles that cause innumerable premature deaths. The world is changing, and the leaders of that change deserve a spotlight.
The hearse offers an interesting representation of what this shift means. As with all things in this world, if there is a “birth” or a beginning, there’s a death or ending. I don’t mean to make light of life — I think it’s a precious gift — but the hearse offers a nice opportunity to reflect on the coming death of the gasmobile industry. We are transitioning from thousands of years of burning stuff for energy & transport to an era of driving on sunshine and wind. A quieter, safer, more peaceful, and healthier future is on our doorstep, but that also means saying goodbye to giants of yesteryear. And what better way to do so than with a Tesla hearse.
The hearse company is Van der Lans & Busscher Staatsievervoer. The special Tesla was modified by RemetzCar, which we covered on EV Obsession right after it did the work. To learn more about why the company decided to get a hearse made out of a Tesla, who orders it, what their reactions are, and what the driver thinks of the car, watch the video below.

I don't like paywalls. You don't like paywalls. Who likes paywalls? Here at CleanTechnica, we implemented a limited paywall for a while, but it always felt wrong — and it was always tough to decide what we should put behind there. In theory, your most exclusive and best content goes behind a paywall. But then fewer people read it! We just don't like paywalls, and so we've decided to ditch ours. Unfortunately, the media business is still a tough, cut-throat business with tiny margins. It's a never-ending Olympic challenge to stay above water or even perhaps — gasp — grow. So ...
