Hubject & Greenlots Offer New Card-Less System To Make EV Charging Easier Than Pumping Gas

A new partnership between the EV charging interoperability experts at Hubject and Shell New Energies’ Greenlots have a new solution that uses the unique identity of each vehicle to authenticate and authorize EV charging and holds the key to making EV charging even easier that pumping gas. Simply plug in and go.

Anyone who has used public chargers knows that the process requires a bit of learning. Each charging network typically requires its own RFID card or smartphone app and account to be setup before it can be used which makes EV charging in public unnecessarily difficult compared to the universally understood swipe of a credit card.

A new partnership between the EV charging interoperability experts at Hubject and Shell New Energies’ Greenlots aims to change that with a new solution that uses the unique identity of each vehicle to authenticate and authorize EV charging and holds the key to making EV charging even easier that pumping gas. Simply plug in and go.

The solution integrates Hubject’s Plug&Charge ecosystem and public key infrastructure with Greenlots’ SKY network that connects the cars to the charging network backend to allow for secure authentication and authorization of a charging session simply by plugging the vehicle in.

“Our expertise in Plug&Charge implementation has been developed over the last several years and Greenlots recognized our ability to provide them with the most advanced solution to enhance their customers’ EV charging experience,” said Paul Glenney, North American CEO of Hubject. “Through partnerships with industry leaders like Greenlots, we’re able to make charging more convenient than ever, a key factor in increasing EV adoption and reducing carbon emissions.”

Data protection and customer privacy were built into the solution from the start and are two of the key reasons it has already been endorsed by, “nearly all major automakers,” according to the press release about the new solution. This allows customers to make charging a seamless part of their day without having to worry about sacrificing personal data for convenience.

“We’re always on the lookout for harmonious technologies that make EV charging faster, easier and more accessible for drivers,” said Harmeet Singh, CTO of Greenlots. “We’re very proud that we will be one of the first EV charging platforms in the U.S. to offer the most convenient charging experience. Making charging as simple as pumping gas is essential now that more and more drivers are switching to electric vehicles.”

I don't like paywalls. You don't like paywalls. Who likes paywalls? Here at CleanTechnica, we implemented a limited paywall for a while, but it always felt wrong — and it was always tough to decide what we should put behind there. In theory, your most exclusive and best content goes behind a paywall. But then fewer people read it! We just don't like paywalls, and so we've decided to ditch ours. Unfortunately, the media business is still a tough, cut-throat business with tiny margins. It's a never-ending Olympic challenge to stay above water or even perhaps — gasp — grow. So ...
