Global Wind Turbine Manufacturers Score Big Orders In India

The Indian spree of wind energy auctions seen over the last two years has resulted in an upsurge in orders for some of the leading wind turbine manufacturers. This recent jump in orders comes as developers look to meet the deadlines to commission their respective projects.

Over the last month, wind energy project developers in India have placed orders of around 1.2 gigawatts in capacity. The likes of Vestas, Nordex, Senvion, Suzlon, GE Renewable Energy, and Siemens Gamesa have secured orders from several Indian and foreign project developers.

In mid-December 2018, Indian manufacturer Suzlon Energy secured an order to supply turbines for 50.4 megawatts capacity. The order was placed by Atria Power. The project will be located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, and is expected to be commissioned by Q3 2019. The value of the order is expected to be around Rs 300 crore ($43 million). Suzlon will supply hybrid lattice tubular (HLT) tower models for this project.

Siemens Gamesa secured an order to supply 63 units of its SG 2.0-114 wind turbines for a project planned in the western state of Maharashtra. The company has managed to secure 5.5 gigawatts worth of orders since it debuted in the Indian market in 2009. While Siemens Gamesa has not revealed the name of the client, it could be from Torrent Power, which secured an order to set up 124.4 megawatts of capacity in an auction organized by Maharashtra in March 2018.

GE Renewable Energy won an order from one of India’s leading renewable energy generators. ReNew Power placed the order for 120 2.5-132 turbines to be installed at the Gadhsisa Wind Farm in Gujarat. ReNew Power secured a project of 400 megawatts in February 2018 in an auction organized by the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI). The order adds to GE’s portfolio of 1.8 gigawatts in India spread across 37 wind farms.

Vestas Wind Systems secured an order from a subsidiary of Continuum Wind Energy for 101 megawatts. The project will be located at a wind farm in Gujarat. The project involves supply, installation, and commissioning of 46 units of its V120-2.2 MW turbines. The project is expected to be operational by Q2 2019. The project is perhaps among the very few new ones that are not the result of a competitive auction. India shifted to the a competitive auction regime for wind energy project in February 2017, and there remains little incentive for developers to set up projects with no long-term power purchase agreements with large utilities. Continuum Wind Energy is expected to sell power from this project to commercial and industrial consumers.

Senvion earned a repeat order from Alfanar Energy recently. The order involves full EPC services for 131 2.3M130 wind turbines which are expected to be fully commissioned and operational by Q2 2020. Senvion will also be responsible for operations and maintenance of the project for 10 years. Alfanar Energy had secured the rights to develop the project in the fifth tranche of the SECI auctions. Senvion secured a 300 megawatt order from Alfanar Energy last year as well, and the project was awarded in the third tranche of SECI auctions.

Sprng Energy placed an order for 300 megawatts with Nordex Group. The project was awarded to Sprng in the fourth tranche of SECI auctions in April 2018. Nordex will supply, erect, and commission 100 AW140/3000 turbines with 3 MW of installed capacity. The project will be located in Tamil Nadu, and is expected to be fully operational by Q1 2020.

More developers can be expected to the place large orders in the coming weeks. Developers that secured projects in NTPC and SECI auctions tranches five and six could soon place orders.

I don't like paywalls. You don't like paywalls. Who likes paywalls? Here at CleanTechnica, we implemented a limited paywall for a while, but it always felt wrong — and it was always tough to decide what we should put behind there. In theory, your most exclusive and best content goes behind a paywall. But then fewer people read it! We just don't like paywalls, and so we've decided to ditch ours. Unfortunately, the media business is still a tough, cut-throat business with tiny margins. It's a never-ending Olympic challenge to stay above water or even perhaps — gasp — grow. So ...
