How Many Tesla Model 3’s Were Delivered In May?

It’s time to estimate US Tesla sales again. Since Tesla likes to make it hard on us, the company has started shipping Model 3’s to Canada. That means that aside from the normal factors of uncertainty regarding production and delivery, we also now have uncertainty about where those deliveries occurred. Our friend (and occasional CleanTechnica contributor) Matthew Klippenstein publishes Canadian electric car sales reports over on Green Car Reports, but we’re yet to see Tesla’s April numbers, so it will be quite a while before we get May stats.

And just for a bit of extra fun, the Model 3 battery production line was shut down recently in order to add a bunch more robots and jack up production. The effect all of that had on May numbers is hard to guess.

Then there’s the case of the disappearing VINs. Bloomberg has this one:

Hmm — what to make of that gap?

By May 31, Bloomberg estimated that 30,735 Model 3’s had been produced in total. If you run with our estimate that 12,957 Model 3’s were delivered in January through April of 2018, as well as the easier to verify fact that 1,772 had been delivered in 2017, then you get a remaining 16,006 Model 3’s that had presumably been produced but not yet delivered.

From that 16,006 figure, you have to then estimate how many of those Model 3’s went to Canada and how many more weren’t delivered at all before the turn of the month 15 hours ago.

Or, of course, you could assume the Bloomberg estimate is way off, you could assume our estimate through April was way off, and/or you could presume the whole world is an illusion and none of it matters.

In any case, I am highly curious to see what you think the May US delivery total was. I’m also curious to see what you think the May Canada delivery total was. Throw in your estimates!

I’ll publish my US electric car sales report in a few days, so I’ll hold off on a providing my estimate till then in order to not sway opinions here too much.
