Greenlots announced that it has been selected to provide network services for an EV charger installation expansion in Thailand. The expansion is part of BMW Thailand’s ChargeNow program.

The announcement shared that Thailand’s leading state-owned utility, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, will add 50 new Level 2 chargers utilizing Greenlots backend communications to connect all of the stations using Greenlots’ Sky Network Operating Platform. First and foremost, the system connects each of the stations to the internet, allowing for reporting and management of each station through a web dashboard.

The system gives station owners — in this case, the Thai state-owned utility — visibility into station utilization, performance, uptime/downtime, profitability, etc. Aungkana Sukviboon, Director of Demand Side Management and Planning Division for EGAT, spoke to the value of this type of data:

“As we deploy our EV charging network across Thailand, we need real-time data to understand the impact EVs are having on the grid, as well as the ability to manage the increased load itself. Greenlots’ sophisticated charging platform provides the best possible experience for both operators like us as well as the customers making use of our chargers.”

Greenlots’ system adds value to the equation with valuable features that builds on station-dependent features:

  • Mix pricing based on per hr, per kWh, or per session
  • Flex pricing allows different prices for time of day and day of week
  • 5 station groups allow greater flexibility of usage policies
  • Create Enterprise admin to manage station pricing and usage policy rights
  • Ability to add users and assign user groups
  • User groups allow you to set unique usage policies for each group (e.g., restricted use or discounted pricing)
  • Paid monthly for charging revenue with detailed transaction info

Importantly, the system allows for interoperability between various EV charging networks and provides a single, uniform front end for client-side management of their EV chargers at a macro level. The solution is truly “end to end” and includes a robust mobile app, flexible customer pricing options, real-time system data, and advanced analytics that enable station owners to optimize charging rates for profitability or maximum utilization, depending on their goals.

Speaking to the new chargers being added in Thailand, Lin-Zhuang Khoo, Senior Vice President of Strategy at Greenlots, shared the following statement:

“This major expansion of EV charging networks in Thailand represents a watershed moment for electric vehicles in Southeast Asia, with high demand for increased charging options for consumers. EGAT and BMW Thailand’s decisions to utilize Greenlots’ comprehensive technology solutions represent global market validation for our products and signal that major companies, including utilities and automakers, will continue to play a critical role in the build out of EV infrastructure worldwide.”

Beyond the exciting network features that the Greenlots solution will bring to Thailand, the fact that the additional chargers were rolled out as part of an agreement between BMW and the Thai state-owned utility speaks to the potential for automotive manufacturers to support public EV charging infrastructure expansion not only through direct investment but also through creative partnerships.

The transition to electrified transportation offers the promise of a better, cleaner life for millions if not billions of people around the world, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. It’s exciting to see that amidst change, which can be scary as it disrupts the lives we are so comfortable with, solutions are being developed that help bring the disruptive technologies out of the lab and into the real world where we can all benefit from them.
