Portugal & Brazil Partnering For Affordable EV Production

In order to quickly increase the number of affordable offerings available to the public, the Center for Excellence and Innovation for the Automobile Industry (CEiiA) and Itaipu Technological Park (PTI) are partnering for the production and sale of an electric vehicle developed by the two, as revealed in a public announcement from the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, and the President of Brazil, Michel Temer.

The new, “affordable” electric vehicle (EV) will reportedly be built in Brazil, and then offered for sale both throughout South America and in Europe.

I said “developed by the two” above, but to be more specific, it seems that CEiiA developed the EV and that PTI is rather “doing some further improvements.”

I’m probably not one of the only ones here who doesn’t know what CEiiA is (even though we photographed some of its unique vehicles a few years ago), so I’ll go ahead and post this (via Push EVs): “We are a Centre of Engineering and Product Development that designs, implements and operates innovative products and systems alongside our partners in the aeronautic, mobility, naval/offshore, and automotive industries. We offer complete solutions based in robust engineering skills and unique project methodologies, covering all product development phases from concept to the production of small series, and we operate intelligent systems.“

And: “CEiiA was created in 1999 with the goal of supporting the competitiveness of the Portuguese automotive industry. Since then, CEiiA enlarged the activity, focusing on mobility, aeronautics and offshore, always pushing the industry!”

Interestingly, some of the organization’s technologies have apparently been used in offerings from Porsche, Siemens, Volkswagen, Pininfarina, and Isuzu.

Exact specs haven’t been revealed yet, so there’s not much else to go on. Given that the plan is apparently to sell the EV in South America, one would guess that they model will be fairly cheap. How much so? I guess that we’ll have to wait to find out.
