One of the leading appliance manufacturing companies in the world — Electrolux — has announced that it has been awarded a position in the Carbon Disclosure Project’s Climate A List for 2016. The company has also announced a target to significantly increase the share of renewable energy consumption.

According to a press release issued by Electrolux, the company has set a target to increase the share of renewable energy used in its operations to 50%. This will complement the company’s existing target to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 50% by 2020.

“We are now increasing our efforts to use more energy from renewable sources. This year, we’ve signed an agreement to only use renewable electricity in our European manufacturing of major appliances, and are moving forward with setting new goals for the rest of the world. Our ambition is that half of Electrolux energy should come from renewable sources by 2020. This means we have to more than double the share of renewable energy from today,” said Henrik Sundström, Head of Sustainability Affairs at Electrolux.

According to Electrolux’s sustainability report for 2015, the company states that its 13 manufacturing units across Europe will procure electricity exclusively from renewable energy sources starting this year. “Collectively, this is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 75,000 tons per year, which equates to 60% of our emissions in Europe and 20% of our total emissions in operations in 2015,” the company reported. Electrolux headquarters in Sweden and the UK meet all of their electricity needs from renewable energy projects only.

Some of the other targets announced by Electrolux include:

  • Improve energy efficiency of manufacturing sites and warehouses by 20% by 2020 (baseline 2015)
  • Reduce water consumption in manufacturing by 5% every year in areas of water stress
  • Improve the CO2 efficiency of transportation by 15% over five years
