Faraday Future & LG Chem Enter Into Lithium-Ion Battery Cell Supply Agreement

Faraday Future has entered into a lithium-ion battery cell supply agreement with prominent EV battery manufacturer LG Chem, according to a new press release from Faraday Future.
The agreement will see LG Chem supply battery cells to be used in Faraday Future’s electric vehicles, but there’s more to it than that — it “represents a joint commitment between both companies to collaborate on the development of EV battery technology, resulting in the world’s highest energy density for a production automotive battery.” Or so the press release claims.
The battery cells will seemingly be incorporated into Faraday Future’s VPA platform — the company’s scalable modular battery structure platform.
“LG Chem worked closely with Faraday Future to develop a tailored cell chemistry to optimize the range and safety of our mass production battery hardware,” commented Tom Wessner, VP of Global Supply Chain at Faraday Future. “At FF, we are working with world-class suppliers to advance our technological innovations, and we look forward to our relationship with LG Chem as we push towards our vision of future mobility.”
UB Lee, President of Energy Solution Company at LG Chem, also commented: “As a leading supplier of automotive cells and batteries, we are proud to work alongside Faraday Future as we work together to create the next generation of electric vehicles. Our progress so far represents a major step forward in battery technology, and we look forward to growing our partnership and co-developing hardware into the future.”
This is seemingly another feather in the cap for LG Chem (to go along with its great relationship with GM, with Tesla for some products, with Renault, with Volkswagen and Audi, and with several others).
But whether Faraday Future is going to release a commercially competitive electric vehicle, as GM certainly has and will, still remains to be seen. It seems to be on the path there, but it’s still hard to know how many gaps need to be filled before the company can sell and ship production cars.
