The German firm Borgward has been awarded Plus X Awards in the categories of Design, High Quality, Ergonomics, and Functionality for the BX7 plug-in hybrid series SUV.

In addition, the Borgward BX7 was granted a seal of quality as SUV of the Year 2016/2017.

Never heard of the SUV? We hadn’t either, but the German-design vehicle is already on sale in China and India, and is planned for release in Europe next year.

Bogward plug-in SUV

“The Borgward BX7 has demonstrated once again that we’re on the right track with our product strategy,” stated Tom Anliker, Vice President Marketing, Sales & Service at Borgward Group AG, at the recent the awards ceremony in Bonn, Germany. “The Plus X Award is a very prestigious one for us because it honors both the outstanding design quality and the top-class functional performance displayed by our premiere model.”

The press release provides some context on why exactly the BX7 won, noting, “the outstandingly spacious and sporty TS interior combines classical elements with innovative state-of-the-art components to create a harmonious atmosphere. Here, high-quality, velvety-soft premium nappa leather with the classical Borgward contrast stitching in hand-made quality is perfectly supplemented by innovative components such as a 12.3-inch central media touchscreen display. The sport program also includes a flat-bottom sports steering wheel and sports pedals. The interior also features the same brushed aluminum that serves as the distinguishing material for the exterior trim in the TS equipment line. This brushed aluminum refines the dashboard, the handles on the center console, and the air conditioning vents, as well as other components. Other refining elements with a velvety sheen include the aforementioned sports steering wheel and pedals, as well as the gearshift and rocker panels with illuminated TS lettering.”

The model was launched last month in China, and will be released in India and other regional markets later in 2016. The European launch (Germany, Austria, and Switzerland) is currently slated for 2017.

  • This is not a german company anymore. It’s a chinese company (Beiqi Foton Motor Co., Ltd.) that just bought the name of the former german company.

    • That’s probably why it isn’t a “clean diesel” instead.

    • It looks as if they hired a German design team as well. Were there conditions attached to the sale of the brand?

  • o_O and what’s the carbon footprint for creating this thing that’s not even all electrric?

  • “Plus X Awards” for “flat-bottom sports steering wheel and sports pedals”.

Exactly what the car industry needed. A never-heard before prize and some interior trim. I’m inpressed.

  • If I were writing the press release, I’d have avoided the “Leukoplastbomber” Lloyd LP300, see link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lloyd_300 and the quote: “By the 1950s, however, some thought it anachronistic and the Lloyd 300 quickly acquired the soubriquet “Leukoplastbomber”, an essentially untranslatable term referring to its “cute” shape and the “plasticky” character of the car’s synthetic leather skin.”

  • We are the Borg. Resistance is futile.

  • SUV: Higher and heavier than a sedan/hatchback/station wagon with no significant improvement in interior space and truly “needed” by 5% of the people buying them.

  • Not one sentence on the plug-in hybrid capabilities?
