All-electric versions of the Smart Forfour and the Cabrio are on the way, according to parent company Daimler.

Notably, this means that all 3 of the brand’s models will be available as both all-electric (EV) and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

Smart ForFour Electric

The company also recently revealed that the refreshed Smart Fortwo EV would be launching in the US market before being launched in the European market. The reason for the move? Apparently, around 25% of all Fortwos sold in the US over the past few years have been the EV version.

The press release provides more:

Soon zero-emission driving fun can be experienced not only in the smart fortwo coupé and smart fortwo cabrio, but for the first time also in the four-seater smart forfour. In future smart will be the only car manufacturer worldwide to offer its entire model range with both combustion engines and pure battery-electric drive. The new electric smart family will be celebrating its world premiere this year at the Paris Motor Show.

…The driving characteristics will be as agile and lively as ever. The ultra-small turning circle also contributes to this, and at 6.95 meters for the two-seater it corresponds precisely to that of its sibling with conventional drive. And every wish will be catered to with regard to colours and optional equipment — electric driving at smart offers maximum scope for customization. The charging time is an important factor for electric vehicle customers and the new smart electric drive also boasts major improvements here.

Following the world premiere of the models at the Paris Motor Show, they’ll be launched sometime before the end of the year in the US, reportedly. A European launch will follow sometime in early 2017.
