“Unless we wake up and do things that really matter, we might run out of time.” Radu Motisan found that his idea “came from a personal need for uncensored, real environmental data. It was a perfect fit for Hackaday’s call to build something that matters and help the environment at global scale.” uRADMonitor has already received international recognition, taking the grand prize in the Arad Innovation Fair and being a finalist in two categories of the prestigious Hackaday Prize competition.

uRADMonitor does matter, and make a difference. It provides clear information of what is invading our environment — information about what needs to stop, information of what robs our children and our health.

uRADMonitor is a global array of network-connected monitoring stations, focused on continuous environmental surveillance, to increase awareness on pollution and protect your health.

Brace yourself for the opening part of this short video below. It is not a made-up sequence in a horror film. The beginning shows an environmental legacy of mishaps, what large companies without conscience have done, causing humankind to suffer from more diseases and more premature death (think of Union Carbide Corporation and the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and how quickly 16,000 people died horrible deaths of poisoning). Think of the vastly corrupted and damaged oceans, other ecosystems, and the Earth’s atmosphere. It is incomprehensible, at best.

Getting back to the uRADMoniter, it is an innovative technology to monitor pollution. The video shows more details:

“uRADMonitor is a project that addresses pollution, the kind that we are unable to see, but directly affects our health and can cause life-threatening diseases. To help fight pollution, we have designed several fixed and mobile detectors, packed with powerful sensors, capable of detecting both the chemical and the harmful physical factors. All data goes online to a global network, so anyone can access it freely, at any time.”

Hackaday Prize finalist Radu Motisan adds, “By training, I’m a software engineer. By hobby, I’m a chemist, physicist, and electronics amateur. By heart, I am the man that will use the best of his skills to build technology that matters — that has an impact on other people’s lives. Luckily this background allowed venturing into the corners of hardware design and production, with ease.”

The first portable unit in the series, this model opens a new direction with additional sensors focused on air quality and pollution.

It can measure temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, dust concentration, pollen, smoke, soot, VOC (volatile organic compounds) and also alpha, beta, gamma and x-ray radiation.

It has a large color LCD with a touchscreen and can connect to WiFi networks to gain Internet access and synchronize all measurements with the central server.

The internal alarm is used for audible warnings for elevated readings, dangerous for our health. These notifications can also be transmitted automatically via email or sms.

The device can measure temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, dust concentration, pollen, smoke, soot, VOC (volatile organic compounds), and also alpha, beta, gamma, and X-ray radiation.

Stop and consider those pollutants that are not smoke that we smell but that still insidiously and quietly disturb our nervous systems and immune systems.
