India’s NTPC Re-issues Tender For 750 MW Solar Power Capacity
NTPC Limited, India’s largest power generating company, has re-issued a tender for the second phase of a 1 GW solar power park being built in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.
NTPC Limited is planning to set up a 1 GW solar PV power plant at Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. Last year the company had issued a tender for the first phase of this project which would see implementation of 250 MW worth of capacity. The company had also issued a subsequent tender for the second phase of 500 MW, however the company has now updated and re-issued the tender for the second phase offering 750 MW.
The company allotted the right to develop 250 MW capacity at the site in May to four developers and was open only to Indian companies. One of India’s leading solar equipment manufacturers and project developers, Tata Power Solar, has been awarded 100 MW while BHEL (a power generation equipment manufacturer), Sterling Wilson (an engineering, procurement, and construction company), and Lanco Solar Energy (solar equipment manufacturer and project developer) have been awarded 50 MW each.
The freshly issued tender for the second phase will be allotted in single or multiple blocks with maximum capacity of 125 MW each with cumulative capacity of 750 MW. The bidding will be open to international companies as well, and with such huge capacities on the table, some interesting trends in the bidding can be expected.
Recently, SkyPower, through a subsidiary, managed to secure rights to develop 150 MW (50 x 3) capacity at the lowest tariff-ever in India. The company placed multiple successful bids ranging from Rs 5.051/kWh (7.95¢/kWh) to Rs 5.298/kWh (8.34¢/kWh).
While the tenders by NTPC have been coming thick and fast, according to media reports published over the course of last few months, the company is believed to be working on setting up at least 3.5 GW of solar power parks across multiple states, including Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
Over the last few months NTPC has issued several large solar PV power tenders as it plans to add 10 GW solar power capacity over the next 5 years with an estimated investment of $10 billion.
