We had a fun article last week on some of the reasons electric vehicles are better than gasmobiles for teenagers. Around the same time, I found a good comment on the GM-Volt forum on the same topic. In particular, the comment below added an important benefit that I wanted to highlight (and am doing via the bold button):
My 15 year old is learning to drive and it’s in our Volt. This will be her second EV car as 10 years ago she drove a Pink Corvette from Mattel. She also crashed that ‘vette into the basketball post, the mailbox post, and my right ankle. Let’s hope the Volt has better luck.
The upcoming generation of kids don’t get into the whole Vroom Vroom anymore, and that’s good. They like smooth and quiet and loaded with tech. (or is it because they think they can get out of paying for gas because it plugs into our electric bill? 🙂 All her friends love it and are now trying to talk the dads into buying a used one for them. All of them remark what a better ride the car is to the old tech. My own daughter has driven our Expedition and her uncle’s souped up Bonneveile and prefers the Volt.
The times are a changing and that’s a good thing. The old dino car owners that denigrate the EVs are going the way of the Dinosaurs too, so the transition is happening.
Thanks to Dan Manusos for that.
That highlights what I once thought would be the #1 thing that would drive the EV revolution (no pun intended): they are much more enjoyable to drive, especially thanks to instant torque (awesome acceleration) and the quiet power of an electric motor. Incidentally, that article above also quoted a GM-Volt forum thread.
Everyone can appreciate this more enjoyable drive, but of course it’s going to excite teenagers!
(Note: I’m not sure now which of many EV benefits will drive the EV revolution the most, but I think it will be this great acceleration or convenience.)
