BMW Group and Brilliance China Automotive Holdings’ joint venture BMW Brilliance recently unveiled its first product, the Zinoro 1E 100% electric vehicle at the Guangzhou Auto Show.

As Green Car Congress notes, aside from being the first vehicle produced by BMW Brilliance, it’s also “the first e-drive SAV built in China, and the first new energy vehicle (NEV) from a Chinese premium manufacturer.”
Here are some of the Zinoro 1E’s details, according to BMW Brilliance:
- range = 150 kilometers (93 miles)
- 125 kW electric motor
- peak torque = 250 N·m (184 lb-ft)
BBA converted an existing BMW product (X1) to create the Zinoro 1E. Three battery packs are mounted at the front under the engine hood, the center and the rear replacing traditional gasoline tank. The battery has passed vibration and crash testing.
A liquid thermal management system keeps the battery pack at an ideal working temperature, prevents over-heating and allows high performance with no compromise on safety and lifetime. The battery passed strict tests under extreme weather conditions in Yakeshi and Tulufan, the company said.
The battery management system monitors the working conditions of the battery in real time and responds to unusual situations within 30 milliseconds by cutting the connections with the electronic devices.
BMW Brilliance’s R&D team is heavily staffed by Chinese employees, and a new R&D center was just opened in September. The R&D staff is projected to reach 500 people by the end of this year.
Unfortunately, BMW Brilliance isn’t looking to manufacturer a large number of Zinoro 1Es, and it is only going to lease them. However, the joint venture does intend to impress with the vehicle, as it’s goal with the vehicle is to build the Zinoro (Zhi Nuo, 之诺, in Chinese) brand and increase awareness of and excitement for electric vehicles.
Beyond this initial EV itself, BMW Brilliance is working to grow the EV charging infrastructure in Chine. “In close collaboration with BMW i, BMW Brilliance is working with related authorities and the third parties such as grid companies and property management to build up the local charging infrastructure and offer convenient charging solutions for the customers.”
I hope all goes well. As the world’s top greenhouse gas emitter, the growing country needs to quickly shift to renewable energy + electric vehicles.
