GoSun Solar Oven — Kickstarter Project Can Cook You Dinner In 20 Minutes With Nothing But The Sun

Originally published on Ecopreneurist.

A lightweight, portable solar oven that can cook you dinner in 20 minutes? Reaches temperatures as high as 550 degrees Fahrenheit? Can be used to bake, boil, or fry? Sounds pretty good, right? Well, the new (yet to be released) GoSun solar stove delivers all of these things and more.

The GoSun stove is currently only a couple of weeks into its Kickstarter campaign but has already blown past its $40,000 goal. Nonetheless, if you’re looking to get your hands on the impressive solar oven, then you can still preorder one with a $219 contribution (MSRP $279) — regardless of the company’s goal already having been greatly exceeded.

The GoSun Kickstarter page explains the technology behind the stove:

Our evacuated tube technology is in essence a giant thermos. This means that when spotty clouds arrive, the tube will remain hot and steadily cook between sun-breaks. Plus, it keeps your brownies warm for hours until a late night snack.

Designed for simplicity, durability, and mobility, the GoSun offers a convenient, user friendly package for our fast paced lives. The GoSun is as simple in principle as it is powerful, effectively retaining 80-90% of all sunlight that is caught in its footprint. The technology relies on the principles of parabolic reflection, evacuation (for its insulating value) and the Greenhouse effect, to make the most advanced solar cooking device to date.

The GoSun will passively work its magic whenever the sun is shining. Water can be heated and hot meals can be prepared with a little patience even on the coldest winter day. A vacuum between two layers of tough glass prevents the outside ambient temperature from transferring into the inner cooking zone.

If you’ve got the money for it, it certainly looks like a good investment. I’ve got my eye on one now myself…

For those interested, there’s also a mini version available for $79.
