Due to their efficiency, plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) reduce the amount of energy used by light-duty vehicles compared to their internal combustion engine counterparts. Estimates show that the energy savings in the United States due to light-duty PEVs in 2019 was 44.8 trillion Btu, up 47% from 2018. The reduction of energy use by plug-in electric vehicles translates to a savings of 470 million gallons of gasoline in 2019.
The following chart from Transport & Environment is a gem. It’s a great chart to explain that battery electric vehicles are, by far, our most efficient automobile option, and clearly the future of transport.
With the upcoming announcement of the Tesla Model Y, and with better and better electric vehicles (EVs) coming out every year, many of our readers might be waiting to switch to an electric ride. Many are waiting for lower prices, more charging stations, more range, or simply want a form factor that isn’t yet available, like a pickup truck or off-road SUV.
This weekend, members of the Tesla Shuttle crew are going to attempt to break the world record for miles/kilometers driven on a single charge in an electric car. The attempt is being led by Tomasz Gać, founder/CEO of Quriers and co-founder of Tesla Shuttle. But I’m also one of those people and will be doing a good chunk of the driving — weather permitting.
