Consumer goods manufacturer Procter & Gamble will be using wind energy to make iconic brands such as Tide and Dawn.

The multinational consumer-goods manufacturer announced last month that it was planning to meet 100% of its electricity demands with wind power in the production of its top selling products, including iconic brands such as Tide and Dawn.

Procter & Gamble (P&G) signed a partnership with EDF Renewable Energy to build a new wind farm in Cooke County, Texas, which will generate 370,000 MWh of electricity per year — which is enough to meet the electricity demands for all of Procter & Gamble’s North American Fabric & Home Care plants, where products such as Tide, Gain, Downy, Dawn, Cascade, Febreze, and Mr. Clean are produced.

“I am delighted that our collaboration with EDF RE continues to provide our consumers with their favorite, high performing brands while reducing our environmental footprint,” said Shailesh Jejurikar, North America Fabric Care President, P&G.

The announcement was made at the White House at the same time as P&G became a signatory of the “American Business Act on Climate Pledge” which will see P&G aim to achieve 30% of its global electricity demand supplied by renewable energy by 2020.

“The participation of P&G to directly procure wind power is a concrete action that demonstrates their understanding of the benefits of renewable energy,” said Tristan Grimbert, CEO and President of EDF RE. “Wind not only emits zero greenhouse gas emissions, but also delivers long-term energy price stability,” he continues “P&G is leading one of the fastest growing markets in the renewable energy space and we are pleased to be their partner to reach their climate pledge goals.”
