Many of us who have been on the ground floor of the renewable energy business are secretly experiencing the warm fuzzy feelings that precede explosive global growth.     Mitigating the Toxic Effects of Excess Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide
    Using Accelerated Photosynthesis
    Abstract
    This concept that takes advantage of Nature’s own way of maximizing rapid plant cell growth. It does not involve the use of chemicals applied to plants, nor does it involve genetic manipulation of plants. Photosynthesis uses water, carbon dioxide, plus light and dark periods in the production of plants. Accelerated photosynthesis makes possible extremely rapid consumption of carbon dioxide
    Facts
    We have been warned for decades about the build-up of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere, and the environmental damage it can do, yet too little has been done to curb carbon dioxide emissions.
    In those decades, while scientists and politicians debated ad infinitum the causes of global warming, and as polluters continued to pollute, our oceans continued to become more acidic due to CO2 absorption.
    Marine life extinction is happening now from carbonic acid, wiping out the algae that supplies our planet with more than half of its oxygen, while simultaneously killing off the diatom algae that forms the basis of the oceans’ food chain.
    Normal concentration of Earth’s atmospheric oxygen is about 20%. Should that fall to 17%, we would be gasping for breath, as was proven in the 1990s Biosphere project in Arizona. How many minutes can we live without oxygen?
    In 2009, carbon dioxide was at 387 parts per million [ppm], well above the 250 ppm considered a safe maximum for the planet. Carbon dioxide is now at 400 ppm.
    According to a 2012 study1: “We are, sadly, on track for 800 to 1000 ppm [of carbon dioxide] this century, which would be the end of modern civilization…” That same study blames human population growth as the main cause of accelerated carbon dioxide emissions.
    According to the July 29, 2011 issue of Science magazine, the world’s human population was 1.6 billion in the year 1900, 3.5 billion by 1960, predicted to be 7 billion by the end of October, 2011, and will expand to 9 billion by 2050.
    More people burning fossil fuels equals more carbon dioxide. More people need to raise more cattle, pigs, sheep, chickens, etc. for food, all of whom exhale carbon dioxide while breathing. Scientists are working to reduce cow flatulence—another big source of methane. All animals, domestic or wild, exhale carbon dioxide
    Possible Mitigating Courses of Action
    In a carbon dioxide molecule, one carbon atom holds two oxygen atoms captive. What we need now on an all-out worldwide scale are low-energy, perhaps catalytic, industrial processing complexes working 24/7 to free that oxygen from the carbon, thus eliminating as much carbon dioxide as possible.
    Accelerated photosynthesis could be used to grow more green algal cells to use up excess atmospheric carbon dioxide in order to make oxygen. A green algal cell, for example, can produce oxygen up to thirty times its volume in an hour, every hour, given sufficient light and carbon dioxide. Given the methods below, this could take place 24/7.
    I have devised two methods of accelerating photosynthesis2 to its maximum rate.
    Again, this concept takes advantage of Nature’s own way of maximizing rapid plant cell growth. It does not involve the use of chemicals applied to plants, nor does it involve genetic manipulation of plants.
    I have placed my concepts for accelerated photosynthesis in the public domain in order that others worldwide may freely develop their versions of my concepts. My versions are only examples of what can be made.
    During the process of photosynthesis, plants need a period of time for exposure to light, and a period of rest—a period of darkness that is longer than that of the light exposure period—to complete the chemical reactions that convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into carbohydrates and oxygen, using chlorophyll and enzymes.
    Maximum plant growth rate through photosynthesis can be achieved by subjecting the plants to alternating periods of light and dark—specifically—light duration of 1/100,000th of a second followed by a dark period of 1/100th of a second duration3. This means that plants will be in a dark environment 99.9% of the time. Of course, light exposure periods longer than 1/100,000th of a second, and dark periods longer than 1/100th of a second will accelerate photosynthesis, but not at its maximum rate. The most basic and least expensive system is discussed first [see note 3 below]. It requires only one moving part.
    A whole new industry can be developed, using the key principle of accelerating photosynthesis, by making thousands of units worldwide to accelerate photosynthesis not only for growing green algal cells, but for growing food in urban vertical greenhouses.
    Given that world human population is expanding to a point that cannot be sustained by the Earth, those humans at the end of this century, if they haven’t died from lack of oxygen, will be fighting for food and farmland, if nothing is done now to curb carbon dioxide and methane pollution.
    If too little is done now to curb carbon dioxide emissions, people in the year 2084, will look back and ask: “Why didn’t they [us], take steps in 2013 and years following to head off certain catastrophe?”

    Did Bush issue CO2 death threats of an exaggerated deadly CO2 crisis to billions of helpless children? Nope, but you did!

    We former believers say so what? Why should anybody listen to you remaining believers and your reckless threats of crisis? It’s only you “believers” that are saying a crisis will happen inevitably because science has never said it. They have never agreed on anything beyond “could be” but you believers say it WILL be. You can’t deny the fact that science has a 30 year old consensus of “maybe” and never “will be”. Their maybe consensus is a consensus of nothing and it’s irresponsible of you remaining doomers to fear monger our children like this even though they are laughing at your Reefer Madness of Climate Blame as history is calling it. REAL planet lovers welcome the good news of “exaggeration” and we rejoice in our children avoiding a crisis. Maybe you fear mongers just hate humanity?
    And get up to date:
    *Occupywallstreet now does not even mention CO2 in its list of demands because of the bank-funded and corporate run carbon trading stock markets ruled by politicians.
    *Canada killed Y2Kyoto with a freely elected climate change denying prime minister and nobody cared, especially the millions of scientists warning us of unstoppable warming (a comet hit).

      OK, lets assume climate change is not real, oil prices are up 5X, electricity up 50%, water shortages have caused India to cancel 85% of planned new coal plants. There are lots of reasons these technologies are doing well that have nothing to do with climate change and everything to do with resource efficiency opportunities.
