The prices of Tesla’s vehicles have been bobbing up and down lately — to the tune of several thousand dollars in each direction. As of today, they have reached what feels like an equilibrium. At the current prices, Tesla’s new Model Y CUV, slated for its first deliveries in the fall of 2020, aren’t too far off from the platform it was built on, the Tesla Model 3.
In my last article, I was comparing the Tesla Model Y to the lineup of crossovers offered by Toyota and Lexus. I made the point that because Tesla decided to include a 3rd row of seating and offers a pretty wide price range and AWD, the Model Y can be competitive with 4 of the Toyota models and 4 of the Lexus models. But it is bigger than that.
One thing has been clear about Tesla vehicles since the Model S — they are designed and built to be the safest consumer vehicles on the planet. The Tesla Model 3 got the best score ever from the NHTSA (even though the NHTSA doesn’t publicize the detailed scores, they are calculated and accessible). The Tesla Model S got the second best score. The Tesla Model X got the third best score.
