I was discussing the dramatic drop in coal use in the US and the dramatic rise in renewable energy production and one of my many conservative friends* referred me to this report to explain why physics proves that there is no way we can transition to renewable sources affordably, that all the innovation is coming on the fossil fuel side, and that renewables have hit a brick wall and won’t be improving much at all.
Is the shale oil boom made possible by fracking coming to an end? Bankruptcies are up, employment is down, and investors have turned off the flow of money needed to sustain the industry.
Despite the hit that many investors in the US shale oil industry have taken in recent years as a result of various producers going bust, a total of around $19.8 billion was invested in the sector by private equity funds during the first quarter of 2017, according to the financial data provider Preqin.
