New York Power Authority–Israel Smart Energy Challenge Winners to Bring Solutions to Scale through Demonstration Projects with New York State’s Public Utility
Connected cars require increased vigilance to ensure their safety. While some of today’s cars have documented vulnerabilities (e.g. the infamous hacked Jeep), Tesla has been steadfast in its efforts to defend against car-hacking efforts. The Silicon Valley automaker even works with “white hat” hackers to proactively identify and fix security flaws. And, Tesla’s robust efforts often involve substantial rewards.
Hackers targeting the electrical grid, your local utility, or the solar microgrid your home is linked into will have a harder time disrupting your electrons in the near future. Manufacturers of electronic equipment used in smart homes, in microgrids, and in utilities are beginning to adopt a set of cybersecurity standards set out by the Underwriters Laboratory. At the same time, manufacturer-sponsored test hacking is helping to drive more frequent —and more secure — firmware and software upgrades.
In the second agreement announced between the two companies this week, GE Renewable Energy has been selected to provide cyber security for Invenergy’s fleet of wind turbines.
