Infrastructure that supports multi-modal travel makes it possible to live comfortably without a car. Vancouver is perhaps North America’s #1 city in this way. How unusual is the city of Vancouver? Well, for one thing, in the 1960s, Vancouver’s citizens refused to allow freeways in the city. That may seem like an obviously smart move today, but it was radical back then.
Despite the very high numbers of people moving to Denver (and Colorado in general) in recent years, much of the city is apparently still less densely populated now than it was in 1950.

Owing to the recent election of Donald Trump as the President of the United States of America, and some of the comments that he’s made to date about infrastructure spending and job creation, the folks over at Bike League recently reposted an old article of theirs discussing the fact that infrastructure projects that incorporate bicycle and pedestrian elements create more jobs than road-only projects. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced that over the next 5 years London will invest £770 million into various bicycling support programs, infrastructure, and initiatives — roughly doubling the amount spent on bicycling support by former mayor Boris Johnson.
Traffic congestion is something I dislike — well, who doesn’t? Bad air from gas car fumes and time lost in clogged and congested traffic have huge societal costs. They come from poor urban planning and an over-reliance on the automobile (an inherently inefficient mode of transport in densely populated places — i.e., cities).
