Tesla Model 3 reservation holders that are getting a bit impatient, and desperate for any sort of distraction at all, may be interested in reading about their ability to purchase (or 3D print) their own Tesla Supercharger–styled smartphone charger.
Tesla is busy installing 1000 Superchargers throughout China. The largest Supercharger installation in the world is now under construction in Shanghai.
We reported in June 2016 and then again December 2016 that Tesla Supercharger stations would be installed at various Sheetz locations throughout the US East Coast, we but didn’t follow up on the matter since then for want of official updates. It appears, though, that installations are well underway now and those wanting to charge their Tesla while getting something to eat at a Sheetz can now do so.
While many have been assuming that Tesla Model 3 buyers/owners will be granted 400 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of free Supercharger use a year, as is the case for Model S and Model X owners, the reality is that nothing solid is known as of yet. It may well end up being the case that Model 3 owners have to pay for every single kWh of Supercharging that they do.
Some have said that the Tesla Model X is a car from the future, but could the Model X also be the ultimate adventure vehicle? Brendan Leonard at Outside attempted to answer that question in the latest issue of the award-winning adventure travel magazine. Before hitting the road in Tesla’s Model X, Leonard’s girlfriend told him, “We’re taking a dirtbag road trip in the least dirtbag car of all time.”
Charging infrastructure for urban areas is a problem. With open land at a premium in congested cities, finding room to install chargers can be a challenge. Tesla is aware of the issue and, as usual, is being proactive in its response. On September 11, Tesla posted on its blog that it has developed a new compact Tesla Supercharger specifically for use in cities.

Royal Farms — an operator of 180 gas service stations in Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Virginia — has partnered with ChargePoint and local utilities to install DC fast chargers at 22 of its locations as part of a massive pilot project.

Coming off a landmark Tesla Model 3 launch event, Elon Musk sounded upbeat, positive and somewhat relieved on Tesla’s recent conference call discussing the company’s second quarter financial results*. He explained that this was: “maybe the best I’ve ever felt about Tesla. Last week stressed the hell out of me but I really think this is probably the best I’ve ever felt about the company.” At one point, Elon said bluntly: “At a systemic level we are substantially more efficient than other carmakers.”
