Many owners of non-Tesla EVs are enthusiastically following the rollout of Electrify America. Unfortunately, it looks like Electrify America stopped announcing under-construction stations, instead only announcing them after they’re up and running. For reasons I’ll explain below, it’s important to get this information out there, and we need your help!
Where did we leave off? Right, in beautiful Romania. Since then, the reports we are getting have become somehow more chaotic. It could be the heat, it could be the tiredness, or it could simply be excellent wine. We will never know. Anyway, in the last entry, I said we would save driving on your last kilowatts for later, and here we are.
Plug-in vehicle drivers have more options than ever when it comes time to find a plug-in vehicle charging outlet. In the US, charging network operators such as ChargePoint and EVgo have developed robust smartphone apps that make finding a station within the network easy. In other countries, there are often similar networks with their own apps for local drivers.
The early adopters of plug-in vehicles cut the path for all later adopters. Many early plug-in vehicle drivers built their own plug-in vehicles. Others worked with manufacturers to show their support for plug-in vehicles and, later, to get in line for groundbreaking plug-ins like the GM EV1 and the Nissan LEAF.
Electric cars — great, fun, quick, clean, smooth, quiet, convenient to charge at home and work. But wait, what’s life like with an electric car? How do you charge? Where do you charge? What do you need to charge? How do you protect the most valuable component of the car — the battery?
Driving an electric car for a bit, I’ve learned what many an EV driver knows well: You should always have 3 — or at least 2 — charging options in mind. Also: Choose wisely. And get lucky.
The good folks over at EV Annex have created a beautiful infographic that lays out the basics of the Tesla Model 3 for the masses of reservation holders who are coming up to the point where they will be able to configure and order a vehicle. (The Model 3 configurator is expected to open after part 3 of the Model 3 reveal next month.)
In addition to nationwide volunteer peer-to-peer sharing, cities, states, utilities and private companies are setting up charging stations for the public.
