Politics is a weird beast. Policymakers are elected in order to enact policies to help society, but politics is largely a cultural war — or even just a series of cult of personality battles. Policy is hardly touched in the lead-up to elections, and people typically go to the polls without having learned much about the policies their representatives have supported or the policies the candidates they’re voting on would like to implement.
Today, I want to update my use of the Edmunds True Cost to Own model to analyze the market for mainstream midsize sedans. I’ll compare the Tesla Model 3 Standard Range to all the leaders in the midsize market today. The short story, as you’ll see if you go through it all, is that the much quicker, safer, and more luxurious Tesla Model 3 can be cost-competitive with the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Kia Optima, and Chevy Malibu.

Tesla has just published its Q3 shareholder letter, which is an absolute blowout. It is far better than even our supposedly “optimistic” forecast. The bullet-point highlights are as follows:
As a consequence of the current trade war, Tesla faces an extra 25% on top of the standard 15% general import duty when importing into China from the USA. That is 25% more than imported German cars and more than 50% over locally produced vehicles that are eligible for EV incentives.
According to a government filing made today in Shanghai, Tesla intends to produce two models at its Chinese Gigafactory in the factory’s first phase — Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3.
