Corning photovoltaic glass? I have to admit, I had to dig through our archives to see if we had ever covered this. And, nope, it’s a new one. Corning Incorporated, a ” world leader in specialty glass and ceramics,” has created photovoltaic glass that it claims is lighter and more efficient than thin-film solar modules. On February 1, it announced the first commercial order of its photovoltaic (PV) glass substrates.
Boulder City, Nevada is best known as the home of Hoover Dam, once the largest hydroelectric power plant in the country. But the rapid expansion of solar power projects is quickly making a name for the city as the first solar-financed town in America.
Germany’s Centrotherm Photovoltaics has signed an agreement with IDEA Polysilicon to construct the Middle East’s first polysilicon solar PV manufacturing facility in the Saudi Arabian Red Sea coast city of Yanbu. The agreement aims to provide IDEA the technology and know-how it needs to become a market force in the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region, a market that’s attracting more and more interest from industry players globally.
In total, wind and solar power were responsible for 68% of new EU power installations in 2011 and renewable power as a whole was responsible for about 70%. Over 30,000 MW of the 44,939 MW of new power capacity came from wind and solar—that’s a 37.7% increase over 2010 and sets a new record for the EU.
Yesterday was all about small-scale or medium-scale solar (in the US & UK) here on CleanTechnica. On the flip side, news today from Solarbuzz is that utility-scale photovoltaic solar is growing fast in North America and looking for its top year in 2012.
