Volvo Teases EX60 with “Groundbreaking User Experience”

Volvo Cars has the most ambitious electrification plan among non-tiny legacy automakers. At the moment, 20% of its global vehicle sales are fully electric vehicle sales. Another 24% are plugin hybrids. The company plans to reach 90–100% plugin vehicle sales by 2030. One of the models that is expected to supercharge this transition is the coming Volvo EX60.

We don’t really have new information on this model yet, but Volvo Cars just put out a teaser image of the model and announced that the updated model would be unveiled on January 21, 2026. There will be a whole livestreaming event for the model, with the live event being in Stockholm, Sweden. You plan a global livestreaming event like this when you are really excited about a new product. It seems that Volvo Cars does expect the coming EX60 to be a marker in its evolution and history.

“Born electric, it will be the first car launched on our latest technology base – delivering a longer electric range than any Volvo car before it, along with a groundbreaking user experience,” Volvo Cars writes. So a groundbreaking user experience and a new technology base — sounds interesting. Will it really take the industry to a whole new level somehow? We’ll have to wait and see.

The EX60 is also going to be Volvo Cars’ first fully electric midsize premium SUV. This is, of course, a major market these days, and Volvo Cars notes that it is “already a leader” in this vehicle segment. So, naturally, the company hopes and expects that the EX60 will do particularly well. “Set to become a cornerstone in the product line, the EX60 marks a significant step in Volvo Cars’ transformation into a fully electrified car maker,” the company adds.

Production of the EX60 will take place in Gothenburg, Sweden, at the company’s Torslanda factory. Without a doubt, Europe will be its prime market. However, one would presume that it would come to the United States eventually. In the second quarter, Volvo Cars sold 2,737 electric vehicles in the USA — 1,383 units of the EX30, 382 units of the EX40, and 972 units of the EX90. Approximately 9% of its vehicle sales in the US are EVs. Could the EX60 double EV sales on this side of the Atlantic and bring the EV share of Volvo Cars’ quarterly totals to 20%? Probably not, but let’s see. It is in the “Goldilocks” area of vehicle classes in the United States. Americans are less inclined to buy smaller vehicles like the subcompact EX30 and compact EX40, while the much larger EX90 is outside of mainstream buyers’ price range. The EX60 could be the “just right” model for many Volvo shoppers, and many EV shoppers more broadly.

Volvo is consistently a leader in the auto industry on matters of human safety and Earth safety/sustainability, including now on the important matter of green steel. There are many reasons to buy electric cars, but for those who are in the EV market first and foremost because they are trying to protect our climate and preserve human livability on Earth, a Volvo could be the perfect purchase. Maybe the EX60?
