Siemens Gamesa Secures 471 Megawatt Brazilian Wind Turbine Order

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy announced on Wednesday that it would supply 136 wind turbines to Brazil’s Santa Luzia wind complex, which consists of 15 wind turbines with a capacity of 471 megawatts (MW).
It’s already been a big year for Siemens Gamesa, a year on from the successful merger between Spanish wind energy developer Gamesa and Siemens’ wind energy business unit, being named the world’s leading wind turbine manufacturer earlier this year and signing numerous contracts in existing markets, as well as the world’s newest offshore wind market in Taiwan.
Continuing its big year, and solidifying its role as a dominant player in Brazil, Siemens Gamesa announced on Wednesday that it had secured its largest ever Brazilian contract for 471 MW. Specifically, the company’s Brazilian subsidiary Siemens Gamesa Energia Renovável signed the agreement to supply Neoenergia, Iberdrola’s own Brazilian subsidiary, with 136 of its SG 3.4-132 turbines for the Santa Luzia complex which will consist of 15 wind farms in the state of Paraíba, in north-eastern Brazil.
“We are very proud that Iberdrola has selected us for such an important endeavour,” said José Antonio Miranda, CEO of Siemens Gamesa in the Americas. “It constitutes a milestone in the history of the Brazilian wind sector as it is one of the largest turbines contract ever placed in this market.”
Siemens Gamesa is the second-largest original energy manufacturer (OEM) in Brazil, behind GE Renewable Energy which, in September of 2017, announced that it had completed the installation of over 5 gigawatts (GW) in Brazil. Siemens Gamesa, for its part, has installed over 3 GW in its 8 years in-country and boasts a market share of 24%. Brazil’s own installed wind energy capacity sits at 13 GW and there’s another 5 GW in its pipeline, making the South American country one of the world’s most important wind markets.
This new contract has not yet been signed and, as of writing, has not been counted towards Siemens Gamesa’s third quarter.
