BYD BEV Sales Up 28.4% in August

BYD’s sales trends in August were positive overall, but some areas of the business grew a lot while others struggled to find any growth at all.
The fully electric (BEV) side of its passenger vehicle business was excellent, a shining success for the company. With 256,230 deliveries, its passenger BEV business grew 9.9% month over month (compared to 233,105 deliveries in July), but much more impressive was that it grew 28.4% year over year (compared to 199,585 deliveries in August 2025).
Was that enough to get the company’s overall 2026 BEV sales into positive growth territory? Not quite, but it’s getting closer. Overall, across the first 8 months of the year, BYD delivered 1,356,814 fully electric passenger vehicles, just 3.14% less than in the first 8 months of 2025 (1,400,853).
However, not doing nearly as well, plugin hybrids (PHEVs) barely grew year over year, and declined slightly month over month. BYD had 177,154 PHEV deliveries, down 0.5% from 177,967 in July and up 3% from 171,916 in August 2025. Across the first 8 months of the year, sales dropped 11.22%, from 1,424,949 to 1,265,017.
So, overall, when it comes to passenger vehicle sales, BYD has almost gotten back into the positive with BEVs but is still far off its previous high with PHEVs, meaning that passenger vehicles overall are going to struggle to get into positive territory. That said, the August trends were positive across the board. With 433,384 total passenger vehicle sales in August 2026, the company had 5.4% growth month over month (up from 411,072 in July) and 16.7% growth year over year (up from 371,501 in August 2025). Looking across the first two-thirds of the year, however, sales are still down 7.22% (from 2,825,802 in 2025 to 2,621,831 this year).
Will BYD reach net positive passenger vehicle sales in 2026? I’m still thinking it will, but just slightly.
