Plug & Charge capability is important for convenient on-the-road charging. It’s very helpful, especially to people new to EVs, to just be able to plug into a charging station and have the charging start — without fumbling with RFID cards, apps, telephone operators when the charging won’t work, etc. A number of stakeholders got together to create Plug & Charge in order to do away with those issues, and more and more automakers are making their electric cars Plug & Charge capable.

The news today is that certain 2025 Kia EV6 and 2026 Kia EV9 vehicles will have Plug & Charge capability. “Kia America announced the launch of Plug & Charge, a new technology designed to simplify the public charging experience for Kia EV drivers, is coming soon and will expand the charging experience through Kia Charge Pass,” the company wrote today.

“As part of Kia’s commitment to delivering smart, intuitive mobility solutions, Plug & Charge joins the Kia Connect suite of services and will be available for eligible 2025 EV6 vehicles by the end of September and in Q4-2025 for eligible 2026 EV9 vehicles. Additional communications will be sent to current owners when the feature is available.”

Kia EV owners have to first activate Plug & Charge via the Kia Access app, but then, when they pull up to a compatible charging station with Plug & Charge capability, they just have to plug in and charging starts automatically. The software and related hardware mean that the station automagically recognizes the car and nothing else is needed. Here’s Kia’s summary of the key benefits:

  • Seamless Charging Experience: Drivers simply plug in their vehicle—charging and payment begin automatically.
  • Secure Authentication: Vehicle identity is securely verified at the charging station, ensuring only authorized vehicles can initiate charging.
  • Automatic Payment: Billing is securely processed using the payment method linked to the driver’s account, providing a hands-free, hassle-free transaction.

Indeed. It’s really as simple as that. Welcome to Kia for joining the party.
