One key way the Chinese smart EV company Nio has tried to expand and keep growing is through its more affordable “family-oriented” brand Onvo. I’ve wondered for a while how well this will work. Though, looking at the new Onvo L60, it’s hard to imagine this car not being a hit.

The L60 has plenty of smart tech, it’s a very good looking SUV, and it comes in are a competitively low price. Remember that Nio stands alone in its use of battery swapping. You can get the Onvo L60 for as low as 149,900 ($21,020) if you get the BaaS (Battery as a Service) plan, or you can buy the battery with the car for 206,900 yuan ($29,010).

The L60 includes updates to its “smart cockpit,” and other Onvo owners are expected to get some of these new features via a software update. I’m not really clear what “smart cockpit” means, but this is what Google’s AI says about it:

“It combines advanced hardware and software to create an immersive, personalized, and AI-driven digital experience for all occupants.

“Key features of the Onvo smart cockpit include:

  • Minimalist interior design: The overall layout is clean and uncluttered, similar to a Tesla interior.
  • High-resolution displays: The cockpit is centered around a large, horizontal 17.2-inch 3K infotainment screen and includes a 13-inch head-up display for the driver. An additional 8-inch screen is available for rear passengers.
  • Powerful processor: The system is powered by a high-performance Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chipset, providing strong AI computing power and a fast, smooth user experience.
  • AI voice assistant: The virtual assistant, named Xiaole, uses large language model (LLM) technology for voice-activated controls, making it easy and less distracting to manage car functions.
  • Premium audio system: An 18-speaker audio system with over 1000W of power features Dolby Atmos for a rich, immersive sound experience.
  • Advanced software (Coconut OS): The cockpit runs Onvo’s ‘Coconut’ operating system, which is designed to evolve with over-the-air (OTA) updates for new apps and features.
  • Personalization: The system can identify the driver and automatically adjust settings, such as seat position and temperature, based on personal preferences.
  • Family-focused features: The system is designed with families in mind, and the L60 SUV even offers an optional under-floor refrigerator and a rear entertainment screen.

I mean, aside from the refrigerator, I’m not really sure what is special here compared to what we’ve become accustomed to from Tesla and other Chinese EV makers, but perhaps I’m just putting too much credence on the lingo and the point is that the L60 has all of the great infotainment and tech features we expect from a new EV in 2025. It is much different from what we’d expect 5–10 years ago.

Deliveries of the Onvo L60 are expected to begin by the end of October. Onvo is intent on drumming up support quickly and is offering a handful of incentives for buyers who place their orders before September 20:

  • 144 free battery swap vouchers,
  • 5 years of free NOA navigation assistance,
  • discounts on premium paint colors,
  • special wheel designs,
  • Nappa luxury interior packages
  • Zero down payment and 3 years of interest-free financing
  • 3,000 loyalty points.

New to the updated model are ventilated rear seats and blue-light filtering on the touchscreens.

“The vehicle’s AI capabilities have been enhanced with spatial question-answering features and improved rear-wheel drive assistance on slippery surfaces,” CarNewsCafe writes. “Optional interior upgrades include Moon Brown or Cloud Rice Nappa leather seats, a matching leather steering wheel, premium marble-pattern trim, and a folding table for the right rear passenger.”

Here are some more specs and details:

  • 0–100 km/h in 4.6 seconds
  • 11.9 kWh per 100 km energy efficiency
  • 900V silicon carbide electric drive system
  • 340 kW (456 hp) and 440 Nm of torque (AWD)
