We recently had the opportunity to interview Mike Richter, the president of next-gen geothermal company Brightcore Energy and a former top-tier NHL goalie who won the Stanley Cup as well as the Olympic gold medal. One may have some bias creep in when being presented with the fact that a former pro hockey player is the president of a geothermal energy company, but I guarantee that if you listen to the full podcast, you will respect his technological and scientific knowledge as well as you do his puck knowledge.
In the podcast, talking with CleanTechnica COO Scott Cooney, Mike explains what geothermal is, how it works, and why it’s now among the most cost-effective and scalable solutions for heating and cooling large buildings. However, he goes well beyond that. He explores the innovations making geothermal more accessible than ever, takes a look at some recent projects, and discusses what’s next for Brightcore Energy and the industry as a whole as demand for deep building decarbonization continues to grow. I encourage you to listen, and to make sure you have quiet surroundings and clear headspace to absorb everything in this episode.
You can also listen to the podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, SoundCloud, Overcast, Pocket, Podbean, or Radio Public.
Nudged by Scott, Mike does talk a bit about his experience as a pro hockey player, which was indeed fascinating in itself, and how that relates to what he’s done post-hockey. For those curious, here’s a bit more about Mike’s background from the PR team repping hime and Brightcore Energy: “After retiring from the NHL, Mike studied Ethics, Politics, and Economics with a concentration in Environmental Policy at Yale University. He then launched a career in sustainability, working in private equity and project finance for environmental solutions providers. Mike joined Brightcore Energy in 2016 and has since been helping them in their mission to be a leader in geothermal, solar, LED lighting, and other clean energy technologies.” Interesting stuff! Can you think of a former pro athlete who is doing more in a cleantech sector?
