BYD Electric Truck Sales Up 10%

As reported earlier today, BYD’s full electric car sales were up 34% in August (year over year) while its plugin hybrid electric car sales were down 23%. You can take that as a positive or a negative, depending on your preferences and how you look it, but the net result for passenger vehicle sales was just 0.2% growth. Now, how about heavy-duty commercial electric vehicles?

BYD’s electric bus sales were … mediocre. With 382 sales, bus sales were down 41% from the 647 sales of August 2024. Across the first 8 months of the year, though, sales were still up 10.6% year over year.

BYD’s non-bus commercial vehicle sales were actually up 10.2% year over year in August. However, the long-term trend that you can see in the chart above is not as positive. After that strong, crazy rise in BYD’s commercial truck sales going through April, there’s been a pretty steep slide down the other side of the hill going through August.

That said, across the first 8 months of the year, BYD’s non-bus commercial vehicle sales were up a whopping 423.3% year over year. Not too shabby!

These markets are quite unpredictable, roller-coaster markets. So, we don’t really know what’s coming around the corner. However, the future looked a lot more optimistic after April than after August.
