Volkswagen made a big decision to accelerate seriously into the electric future several years ago after getting busted for its dieselgate crimes. As a giant in the auto industry, Volkswagen’s big announcements about its ID. program were a statement for the whole industry and an exciting step forward for the world. Some challenges arose with the launch of the ID.3 and software limitations at delays at that time, but Volkswagen pushed through.

Now, Volkswagen sells the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, and ID. Buzz. It’s one of the biggest and best EV model lineups in the world. The ID.4 is now the only legacy automobile in the list of top 20 plugin vehicles in the world. The ID.3, ID.4, and ID.7 are all top 10 electric vehicles in Europe. Overall, the ID. program has become a successful EV program, and Volkswagen has another big milestone on that to share today.

An ID.7 Tourer Pro was delivered today. That could just be another electric model from Volkswagen, but it was a special one, as it was the 1.5 millionth ID. model delivered from Volkswagen.

“In the presence of the Minister President of Lower Saxony Olaf Lies, the 1.5 millionth vehicle worldwide from the all-electric ID. family was today handed over to a customer at the Volkswagen plant in Emden. The anniversary vehicle is a black ID.7 Tourer Pro, which raises the bar in its class with a range of up to 606 kilometers,” Volkswagen writes.

“In recent years, the Group has invested over one billion euros in converting it into an exclusively electric vehicle manufacturing facility. Aside from Zwickau and Gläserne Manufaktur Dresden, Emden is the only Volkswagen plant worldwide dedicated solely to electric vehicles. Further ID. models are rolling off the production lines in Hanover and Chattanooga (USA), as well as in Foshan, Changsha and Anting (all China).”

“1.5 million ID. models delivered – this clearly shows that Volkswagen is a pioneer in the field of electromobility,” added Martin Sander, Volkswagen board member for sales, marketing, and after sales.

The first ID. models were delivered almost five years ago, in September 2020. So, while the 1.5 million milestone is exciting, and one that not many EV producers can lay claim to, the truth is that much more could be done. Tesla delivered more EVs last year, and more than that the year before. BYD sold 2.14 million plugin vehicles in just the first 6 months of 2025. I get it — Volkswagen faces different challenges from BYD and Tesla. Nonetheless, it’s clear there’s demand for many more electric vehicles when done right and marketed well.

However, I don’t want to take credit away from Volkswagen at this time. As noted, it is leading legacy automakers in various ways. It is electrifying. Could it do so more quickly? Presumably, yes. There’s always room for improvement. But it seems to be trying, and 1.5 million fully electric vehicles is 1.5 million more than zero.

Oh, and I forgot to note — Volkswagen is by far the leader in electric vehicle sales in Europe overall. It has a lot of electric models, and many more if you count all of Volkswagen Group. Consumers appreciate the choice and are buying up all sorts of EVs from the company.

“This confirms that our portfolio contains the vehicles our customers need. As a company, we are on the right path. Volkswagen remains a trailblazer in the ramp-up phase of electromobility,” Sander added.

Let’s get back to that 1.5 millionth vehicle for a moment. “The ID.7 embodies the strength of Lower Saxony and is proof of the state’s ability to transform,” Lower Saxony Minister President Olaf Lies stated.

For sure, there will be much more to celebrate in coming years. Volkswagen is bringing the ID. 2all to market next year at a cost of less than €25,000, and then is bringing the ID. EVERY1 to market at a cost of approximately €20,000 in 2027. “The goal is clear: Volkswagen wants to make electromobility accessible to everybody – affordable, reliable and sustainable,” Sander added.
