Hyundai & Kia EVs Rack Up TSP+ Awards

As we’ve covered for years, electric vehicles inherently bring some safety advantages to the table. Their lower center of gravity from having batteries at their base is especially helpful to prevent rollover accidents, which are particularly dangerous. Also, not needing a large engine in the front of the car, electric vehicles can include more of a crumple zone, which is useful for softening the impact of a collision — absorbing a lot of the impact — and thus protecting the human passengers in the car.

Well, Hyundai and Kia have been taking those advantages and running with them. Three of their electric cars have won 2025 IIHS TSP+ safety ratings. (“TSP” stands for Top Safety Pick, and the “+” stands for an even bigger safety boost above the normal TSP rating.) The three electric models are the Hyundai IONIQ 5, Hyundai IONIQ 6, and Kia EV9. Note that the Hyundai IONIQ 9 is also now on the market, but it has barely arrived, so it wouldn’t have received a rating yet.

Now, admittedly, these aren’t the only models from these two brands that won TSP+ awards. Five more Hyundai models and two more KIA models achieved the same rating. Also, one EV model from Kia, the EV6, didn’t get a TSP or TSP+ rating. That’s disappointing, but, overall, having three of the four models electric models achieve TSP+ ratings is a good result. And I have a feeling the EV6 will get a top safety rating in time.

Here’s a full table of Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models that have received a TSP or TSP+ rating this year:

Note that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is a highly respected organization. It is “an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries and property damage from motor vehicle crashes through research and evaluation and through education of consumers, policymakers and safety professionals,” Hyundai summarizes. “Its TSP and TSP+ ratings are widely cited in the North American auto industry by consumers, media and analysts alike.”
