In a milestone for renewable energy in the Land of Enchantment, Affordable Solar has commenced construction on New Mexico’s inaugural community solar project. The Cuidando Los Niños Community Solar Project, situated in Valencia County, will help to broaden access to renewable energy for New Mexico residents and boost community-driven sustainability efforts in the state.

This community solar project is a collaborative endeavor with Albuquerque-based Gridworks, a leading engineering, procurement, and construction firm. The project’s name honors the non-profit organization Cuidando Los Niños, which is “dedicated to supporting children and families experiencing homelessness.”

The legislative groundwork for such projects was established with the enactment of the Community Solar Act (SB84) in April 2021. The legislation allows electric utility customers to subscribe to energy produced by renewable facilities under 5 megawatts (MW), which enables subscribers to offset their monthly energy expenses through credits on their utility bills. Community solar is particularly advantageous for individuals, businesses, and non-profits that are unable to install personal solar systems, which helps to democratize access to clean renewable energy.

One notable aspect of the Cuidando Los Niños Community Solar Project is its commitment to social equity. Half of the project’s energy output is earmarked to reduce electricity costs for qualified low-income residents, ensuring that the benefits of renewable energy are available to a diverse socioeconomic strata.

Affordable Solar has secured seven community solar projects totaling 35 MW, and collectively these projects are projected to offset the energy consumption equivalent to approximately 15,000 homes, which makes a substantial contribution to the state’s clean energy portfolio.

Dylan Connelly, Project Developer at Affordable Solar, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s commencement: “After nearly four years of hard work, we are ecstatic to begin construction on this historic project and to play a role in bringing renewable energy to communities across New Mexico. This project not only reflects our commitment to clean energy but also highlights our dedication to giving back to the communities where we live and work.”

In alignment with its community-centric ethos, Affordable Solar has pledged financial support to Cuidando Los Niños. An initial donation was made upon receiving the project award, with a more substantial contribution planned upon the project’s completion, anticipated in early summer 2025.
