We’ve looked at the top selling electric vehicles and top selling EV brands in the United States. We’ve looked at overall auto industry sales trends in the US. We’ve looked at how much more electric vehicles have grown compared to fossil fuel vehicles (which have shrunk). Now, let’s complete this series on 3rd quarter US auto sales trends by looking at which auto brands and automotice groups are electrifying their fleet the fastest.
Starting with auto brands, there are the pure EV brands at the top, of course. I could just not include them, but I like showing off the growing number of pure EV brands. Below those brands, a whopping 74.4% of Fiat’s sales were electric last quarter! Of course, Fiat barely has any sales in the US. It sold 316 cars in Q3, 235 of which were electric.
Getting to the more serious comparisons, we’ve got Cadillac on top again, with 19.4% of its 3rd quarter sales being electric! If this EV share continues to grow strongly, it’s going to be interesting to see how GM’s messaging and lobbying around vehicle electrification and fuel economy standards changes over time.
Without a doubt, luxury brands are electrifying much faster. After Fiat and Cadillac, next in the ranking are BMW (15.8%), MINI (13.6%), Audi (11.6%), Mercedes (9.7%), Acura (8%), and Genesis (6.9%). Among more “mass market” value brands, you’ve then got Hyundai and Kia (both at 6.9% as well). But, really, we’re not in very exciting territory anymore down here.
Looking at auto groups as a whole, BMW Group rises to the top of legacy automakers, with 15.6% of its sales being electric last quarter. In second is Geely, which is the parent company of Volvo Cars and Polestar, with 12.7% share of its sales being electric. Considering how quickly Geely is electrifying elsewhere, it’s actually surprising it doesn’t have a higher EV share here in the US, but at least it got the silver medal. Mercedes-Benz Group (9.7%) comes in third before a significant drop-off to #4 Volkswagen Group (7.1%) and #5 Hyundai–Kia (6.9%). There’s then another significant drop-off.
What is most shameful is either “green” Toyota Motor Co. having only 1.3% of its sales being electric or Stellantis being at a shameful 0.1%! Well, there’s also Mazda Motor Co. there at 0%…. All of these auto companies deserve a lot of coal for Christmas — but then again, I guess they might well be happy with that!
