The National Association of City Transportation Officials believes that scooters are here to stay. They offer easy access to clean, roomy bike lanes as well as off-road and on-road routes. To avoid car culture, you can choose a city with many wide off-street bike trails. They make traveling safer. Or go with the faster street traffic and maintain space conservation. On a roadway without a sidewalk, I observed a man riding a stand-up scooter with his six-month-old infant. The street was quiet, but I did find it extremely fearless. The infant loved it. They flew by.

“In 2023, there were 133 million shared micromobility journeys, with scooters accounting for 65 million and bikes accounting for 68 million,” the US Department of Energy writes. “Data for scooters was not accessible until 2018, despite the fact that the first scooter systems were introduced in 2017. By 2023, scooter users will account for almost the same number of rides as station-based bikeshare passengers. All scooter journeys in this data are dockless, whereas the majority of shared bike trips are station-based, requiring bikes to be picked up and returned at designated stations. Overall, micromobility is increasing and contributing to lower emissions and traffic.”
